My name is Gretchen Torrey Slentz and I am an artist. I was born in Delaware
and raised in Maryland. I recently graduated with a BFA in Fibers from Tyler
School of Art in Philadelphia. I grew up surrounded by indigenous folk art,
mostly from Indonesia, to which I credit my love for patterns and detail. In
high school, I discovered Central American folk art and I fell head over heels
for their use of color.
In a nutshell, my art reflects my strong belief in individualism, animal rights
and human rights. I don't like nutshells though...and I am constantly aiming
for something different. I want to be everything. I don't like art-babble, like for
example, "My art is a metaphor for the juxtaposition of the blah blah blah..." I
just make things because I feel like making them.
